Wal-mart, Satisfaction guaranteed (if you complain enough)

What I hate the most in life is the fact that the squeakiest wheel always gets the oil. Why must we be forced to complain, in order to get what we want. I ended up making 3 phone calls; one to the Newmarket Wal-mart, one to Wal-mart Corporate and one to the District Manager of the Vaughan Wal-mart.

In the first call to Newmarket, I was told that I should have no problem returning the bike for a refund, given that I have the original receipt. In the second and third call, I complained about the decision that was made by the Wal-mart manager to give me a store credit instead of a refund. Shortly after, I was called by the Store Manager at Vaughan and we worked it out so that I could get my credit cashed out. Although I still had to push him a little to get him to approve that. Basically he was pushing for me to buy another bike from his store. I told him that was not the point of my rant. My issue was with the so called policy I was fed.

To me it seems like a hollow victory. Sure, I’m getting my money back, but it’s not like I’m getting reimbursed for my wasted time and gas. I’m not saying that I want or deserve something for my trouble. There shouldn’t have been a problem with the return in the first place. Thanks for nothing!

Wal-Mart, where my satisfaction is NOT Guaranteed

Most people have a love or hate relationship with Wal-mart. I admit I shop there. It’s at Walmart where I find those odds and end like kitchy cameras, Wii Accesories and gamer t-shirts. I picked up the Spyshot 6 transformer at Wal-mart, so it does provide a lot blogging fodder for me.

On Friday, I bought a bike at Wal-mart. I just wanted something that was inexpensive that I could use to bike around the neighbourhood. So I thought it was a safe bet. In fact, we got three bikes in total, one for Jay, J2 and myself. Unfortunately, mine was not put together well. The front wheel was a tad warped, the front gears wouldn’t change and overall it wasn’t comfortable. I knew that Wal-mart had a pretty decent return policy so I didn’t worry about it. Below is their posted policy which appears on the back of the receipt, as well as on the walls by the Customer Service desk.

Wal-Mart Return Policy
Satisfaction guaranteed. Our goal is to satisfy our Customers by Exchange, Refund, or Repair. Within 90 days of purchase, we will exchange or refund items with a receipt.

Exceptions:
- 30 days with receipt on computers, computer components and computer accessories, camcorders and digital cameras. These items must be unopened: prerecorded music, movies, software products, computer/video games and boxes of disposable contact lenses.
- Sales are final on Ammunition, fireworks, prepaid phone cards, ink cartridges, pierced earrings.

After 90 days with receipt:
If available, we offer repair service through the manufacturer.

So last night, I take the bike back to Wal-mart for return with every intention on picking out a different bike, depending on their availability. I have my receipt in hand and wait patiently in line. I get to the associate working the customer service desk and explain the situation with the bike. She proceeds to make a call on the phone, talks to someone and returns to inform me that they do not do returns on the bikes because it is a seasonal item. She tells me that they can provide repair on the bike or a store credit.

What miffs me about this whole situation is the fact that this is not mentioned anywhere in their return policy. If this is in fact their policy, why isn’t it posted anywhere? I proceed to talk to the manager and he gives me the same story. He also tells me that they provide one years worth of service on bikes purchased, but don’t do return on bikes. He also tells me that they don’t usually do store credits on bikes either, but he is making an exception in my case. (Don’t go doing me any favors buddy). He went about the whole situation like this policy was well known and implied. But it’s not.

What I don’t understand is that Wal-mart is usually pretty good about their policies. They have all sorts of stipulations listed in their return policy regarding all sorts of other items, but none refer to this policy on bikes. If they had this policy posted, I would have been more cautious in my purchase.

I ended up getting a store credit. Needless to say Wal-mart has left a sour taste in my mouth. My Satisfaction was not Guaranteed.

Gasket by Oakley

gasket

I think I found the glasses I want to get. They are called Gasket, manufactured by Oakley. In a Brown Tortoise colour. Now I just need to source them out in the city.

Update: what do you guys think of the Blue

Weekends are never long enough!

My to do list is just seems to get longer and longer. And I’m behind on my email. I did get a new 500 gig hard drive for my ever growing library of images, thanks to the anniversary sale at Best Buy. I also picked up the newish Basement Jaxx cd which i stumbled up at Sonic Boom downtown (before going to see Re-cycle). I’m not sure when it was released, but it was sometime this year. I’ve adored Bassment Jaxx for years and years now and the pick me up will definitely be welcome in my nano. Speaking of which, the 1 gig is simply not cutting it anymore. My sights are set on the 80 gig iPod. That’s sweet music to my ears.

Anyway, back to the weekend. Saturday, we didn’t end up going to get pumpkins, the monkey had sprained her ankle and was on crutches for most of the weekend. Of course she started mysteriously walking without them by Saturday evening. It’s a miracle! We did see Nightmare Before Christmas in 3D and it was great. It’s simply amazing what they can do with 3D now. Long gone are the days of the red and blue 3D glasses. I would highly suggest going to see the movie in theatres if you get a chance. Strangely enough 6 people from our row left in the first 15 minutes. I guess 3D isn’t for everyone.

Tonight, I saw Re-cycle at the Bloor Cinema. Do you ever wonder what happens to our discarded ideas, our forgotten toys, well they still exist, at least that is the concept behind the movie. This sort of thinking always intrigues me. I’ve had many ideas that I have never run with, and some that I started but never finished. Just imagine how many of these happen everyday to everyone. Imagine another world where these ideas exist because they were never brought to our own reality.

Also saw the movie Just Friends when I was over at my folks place doing laundry. Another interesting concept for a movie. It was enjoyable. A good laugh. And I must admit that I have a crush on Ryan Reynolds despite my sister claiming that he isn’t that hot.

Seems like movies surrounded me this weekend. It’s not a bad thing, but it does leave my to do list a tad longer than I would like it to be.

One thing I did check off my list was dropping off 7 rolls of 120 film to get developed. I’m not sure how many are mine and how many are Jay’s, but it should be interesting to see what’s on it. A number of the rolls have been sitting around the apartment throughout the summer. I seriously need to get into the habit of shooting more 120. Gotta whip out the holga and diana and go nuts around town. Of course, silly me waits until the autumn to do so. Damn you shorter days. When do we turn back the clocks? That must be soon.

So I ask you this, what do Serena Ryder, Iron Maiden and Photojunkie have in common? Weird mix eh? Well we all appear as sidebar links at Strombo.com. Thanks for the love George. What strange company I keep.

One Strange Day – Part Four : Cheap DS lite and the CFL

With no cellphone on hand there were only two numbers that I knew off the top of my head. Jay’s number and my sister’s cell number. Jay was still off in Oshawa, so I called up my sister and she came an picked me up at the dealership. Here’s another rant, Always carry a list of important number in your wallet or maybe in your glove compartment of your car, or have them all memorized. Also carry a number for a towing company or like I said earlier get CAA or some other roadside service)

To get my mind off things, we went to the nearby EB Games and also checked in on the Walmart next door. Surprisingly the Nintendo DS Lite in white was priced at 135 and change ( I don’t remember exactly, but it was around there) It’s regularly prices closer to 148. We were surprised and upon inspection of the store flyers online, they are still priced at 147.77. My sister was tempted, but she held off. She then drove me over to Popeyes for a quick and easy dinner where we made the swap and Jay picked me up.

Before heading home, I finally picked up my cellphone at work. I had two missed messages, one from my father and another stating I won a secondary prize in the Pepsi, Win a trip to the Grey Cup contest. Of course I couldn’t find any information online so I had to wait till this morning to find out what I had won. Apparently the secondary prize was a CFL jersey. I don’t know about you, but I’m not really a sports fan. (Yes I realize it was a football contest, but there were other decent prizes). It was nice going to bed, imagining that I may have won an ipod or maybe a point and shoot digital camera, but it’s simply a jersey. Maybe I can sell it on Ebay.

One Strange Day – Part Three : Stranded on the Highway

So you will notice that the last two installments didn’t have pictures. The one day where it would have been cool to shoot images, especially at the Eye doctors and at Ambient Vector, I was cameraless. I didn’t even have my cell phone on me, which I had accidentally left at work, earlier in the afternoon.

So after my brief stint at the mall. I decided to head back to the office to pick up my cellphone. It’s not too far away, but of course I was hopping on the highway during rush hour. I was on the onramp to the 401 when suddenly my car staled. Luckily I was able to put it in neutral and roll onto the shoulder. Here I am, stuck on the highway, with no cellphone. Fortunately a guy in a beamer pulled over and was nice enough to give me a boost. So I was up and running again in no time, or was I? I noticed that the lights on the dashboard were dimming and at the bottom of the onramp, just as it merged with the highway, my car stalled again. The irony of the situation now, was the fact that I was directly infront of my apartment building, with a huge highway wall barrier between me and home. I was without a phone and to top it off Jay was on his way to Oshawa for a dentist appointment. The view of the dim 12th floor apartment from the highway mocked me in my dire situation. Car were darting around me left and right as I stood in front of my vehicle with the front hood up. Did I also mention there was a light drizzle of rain? Definitely not my lucky day. Soon enough a tow truck arrived, and we decided to tow the car to the dealership where I normally get service done. May as well deal with people I am accustomed to.

This is where I go into my rant on how important it is to have emergency roadside services like CAA available to you. It’s especially important when you have an older car which has a tendency to break down more often. It sure beat the outrageous prices they charge for towing services. Although I must admit the guy who towed me was very professional and not to bad on the eyes. Luckily, the service centre was just closing up for the day when we arrives, but I was able to drop it off safely in their service bay and give my work order done up.

This morning I found out the alternator was busted, which was my guess, considering I had just gotten a new battery for the car just earlier this year.

One Strange Day – Part Two: The iMac have it!

So before going on my spree for eyewear, I stopped into the Apple Store to take a closer look at the various iMacs. It’s one thing to imagine 17, 20 and 24 inches online, but it’s something completely different to look at them up close. Needless to say I was impressed.

The 17 inch was a great size with a great price, quite a good offering. If I go this route, I’d probably max out the HD space, which is very problematic on my current powerbook.

The 20 inches was “wow that’s big” and I totally fell in love with it. This would be an ideal size for me. Currently I have a 12 inch powerbook, which is nice and compact, but trying to do any sort of multitasking on it can be cumbersome, flipping through a pile of open windows. The 20 Inch would definitely give me room to breathe.

The 24 inches was “OMG this is freaking huge” size. It would be nice to have, but is more than I want to spend. So I think it will be between the 17 and 20 inch.

One Strange Day – Part One : The Eyes have it!

It all started off well, yesterday afternoon I finally went in to get my eyes checked with Dr. Kristin Heeney. It was my first time visiting her and the experience was simply amazing. She has a comfortable office downtown and the staff there was simply amazing and helpful. Definitely one of the best visits to an eye doctor I have ever had. (Dr. Heeney was recommended to me by David Crow, who is Kristin’s hubby).

Afterward I went upstairs and visited with David at his Ambient Vector office. These are the fine folks that run Nakama, the service I have been using to upload my cameraphone pictures over to the blog and flickr.

So after the appointment downtown. I made my way up to Yorkdale Mall to check out the eyewear stores. The first stop was Shoppers Optical (previously known as Shorney’s) The clerk there was very helpful, but their selection didn’t suit me although, they did have a sweet 50% off frames deal going on. My next stop was Lenscrafters. I will admit that I have bought from lenscarfters before, but my experience in this store was less than stellar. The problem with me is that I need wider glasses, at lease a 53 or 54mm. The woman who quickly approached me didn’t know what she was offering me. Basically she would judge the size of the glass by looking at them, as opposed to checking the actual size on the arm. So she evnd up handing me glasses which were too small. Then she dragged me over to their sunglasses selection, trying to see if any of those frames suited me. Overall a poor experience, which I will never let myself suffer through again. The third offering was at Seen Optical. The woman that helped me there was great, we dwindled it down to two frames which we both agreed suited me. However the sticker shock drove me out of the store to contemplate the purchase. I know a good pair of fashionable glass aren’t cheap, but 200 plus seems like a lot of money. There was a forth store in the mall which I didn’t walk into because it seemed prettty high end. So the search continues. I’m not going to quickly select my frames the same day as my eye appointment like I have in the past.

So if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.
