RIP Angelica

365 Days Project - Day 006

For Christmas 2006, Jay got me a cage and all I needed so I could have my first pet, a guinea pig. We picked out Angelica the next day and added her to our little family. There had always been an underlying talk about some day getting a dog, but Jay figured a guinea pig would be a good starter pet. Relatively easy to care for, inexpensive yet still cuddly and cute.

She will be missed in the house, with her squeals of joy and her cute little snoring, when I’m up late at night.

Other photos of Angelica can be seen here on Flickr. May she rest in peace, running free in greener pastures.

Cleaning up the Blogroll.

With the recent, Test The Nation experience behind me, I’m finding myself craving the posts of others. But first, I think it’s about time I clean out the cobwebs in the blogroll. So far I’m up to the “E”. loading up site by site to see who is still writing, who has moved to a new url and to see who has totally been wiped off the face of the web. Also going to throw in the additional links of my team mate from the show.

Don’t see yourself on the blogroll? Drop me a line, but I won’t make promises that you’ll be added.

Eating Media

The snow is all gone and it’s strangely warm for January. And over the holidays I’ve started to consume vasts amounts of media, in the form of music, movies and video games. Part of me wants to write and review ever last bit of it and the other part of me is trying to figure out how to convert this creative onslaught into my own work. It’s definitely inspirational how creative we are as humans and it always sends my head spinning in different directions. The problem is that I find myself impeded by my own equipment, but I know that’s simply my mind working against me, becasue a true artist should be able to create great images regardless of what camera he is shooting with.

Every night, my mind fills with ideas and concepts, which make it difficult for me to settle into bed, until I reach the point of exhaustion in the wee hours of the morning. I lay in bed, thinking of amazing series which I should shoot, yet when I wake in the morning, or lately, midday I do nothing to act upon these seeds of inspiration.

Perhaps, I should write these ideas down, to get them out of my head and to give them physical on paper or digitally as 1 and 0 on my computer.

Where do you find inspiration? And what do you do about it when inspiration hits?

Backfill Blogging the Holidays

Another 4am and I’m up. So why not do some backfill blogging. Scroll down and find 6 glorious posts that I’ve added from just before Christmas until now. I think when I wake up this afternoon, I’ll add in some photos over at Eidetikos, with any luck at least.

2007 was quite a year, blogging was sporadic at best but perhaps things will change in 2008. I’ve started this weekly Portrait project and I have a few other series that I want to get started.

It’s all behind me now, and hopefully I can start things fresh. Although I still have a few loose ends I need to take care of.

Basically, I hope the new year means more writing, more photography and more opportunities.

I’m glad 2007 is behind me, but 2008 is scaring me like hell.

Just need some inspiration, motivation and perhaps some perspiration.

Inspiration comes from Richmond Hill

polaroid pinhole

I was pleasantly surprised to have people coming into the gallery on such a wintery Saturday afternoon. Basically, there was someone visiting the gallery the entire time I was there. Including these three high school students from Richmond Hill. When I was in highschool, I don’t think I was culture enough to ever visit a gallery, at least not intentionally. But the three came in and spent a good chunk of time really looking at the work. In the end, they even bought some prints from Sam and Adam, which I thought was quite surprising. But what really impressed me was the fact that two of them, Sarah and Myles were both toting around 35mm SLRs around their neck. Seriously, who does that now a days.

I asked them if either had a photoblog or account on flickr, and Myles admitted, he has been meaning to start a flickr account for quite some time now. So it was even more of a surprise to find an email in my inbox this evening from Myles, telling me about his newly started stream, which already has almost 100 images.

Around the same time, my friend Stefan showed up with his awesome new polaroid pinhole camera. Basically it was made from this retro Niagara Falls tin. I had always been fascinated by pinhole, but after talking with Stefan, I think I might be prepared to finally try one on my own. Pictured above is the one minute exposure we took of me at the gallery. It was handheld, so it was far from being crisp. I’m hoping, he’ll help me make one in the new year. Check out his polaroid pinhole set on flickr.

Dear Santa

So just in case you didn’t already know here is a bit of a wishlist of things I wanted for Christmas. They fall into three categories, Photo related items, Video Games and Gadgets. It’s been a tough year, so it’s always great to know I still have a roof over my head, food in my belly and family who love me. But if you feel like spoiling me, here are a few suggestions.

Photography

Canon 5D or 40D – Ya know this is a high priced item. and I’m happy with waiting for the next generation of Canon SLRs which will likely be announced in the new year. But if one of these appeared under the tree, it would totally help with all the photo work I hope to be doing in the new year.

Canon 580EX II flash – Because I need more light in my life. Of course I have the 420EX, but I’m finding that I’m needing more power, which the 580 can provide.

Canon 24-70/2.8 EF-L USM – A new lens is always a great inspiration. It will allow me to view the world through a new set of eyes.

Video Games

This list is probably more realistic. I’ve been holding off on getting anything new because Christmas was around the corner.

Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 – Apparently not as good as the first one, but even if it is half as funny and strange, it will be a lot of fun. Who can say no to screaming rabbid bunnies?

Soul Calibur Legends – Instead of a a regular vs. fighter, this Soul Calibur is an action, adventure title which looks like it has a lot of promise.

Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga – Who can say no to Star Wars and Lego.

Dewy’s Adventure – I really loved Elibits, and this title from the same creators was suppose to have a lot of promise. It didn’t get great ratings, hmm perhaps I should try renting or borrowing this from some one first.

Mercury Meltdown Revolution – Something totally different from your average game and value priced. How can you go wrong especially when it’s getting pretty good reviews.

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption – I need a good first person shooter game for the Wii. I have Resident Evil 4, but it scares the bajesus out of me half the time.

Gadgets

iPod Touch – Sure, any regular reader know of my lust for this. Sure it’s not an iPhone, but I’ll totally be happy enough with a Touch.

Failing to Update

if you are on facebook, click here for a treat LOL

Been meaning to write here for awhile now, but haven’t found the motivation to.

Been trying to get organized. More shortly. I promise.

I’ve Resigned.

Seven years ago, I discovered blogger.com and started a journey which eventually moved and changed and morphed into the site you see here today. Over eight and a half years ago I started at the office that I currently work in now. I rarely talk about work and on a couple of occasions, people had the notion that I was a full-time freelance photographer, which is not the case. It’s simply amazing how time flies, how doors open and close in your life.

Three weeks ago, I handed in my resignation letter for my current job. It’s been something I have been thinking about for over a year now. And I’ve finally come to a point where I am fairly comfortable doing it. I would have done this in the spring, but there was a project here at work, which I wanted to see through before leaving the company, which in turn is why updates have been so infrequent on the site. Now the project is coming to a close and so is my time here, which is odd and exciting . Don’t get me wrong, I’m totally scared at the propect of being unemployed, but I’m totally excited at the various possibilities that lay ahead of me. When I tell someone that I’m leaving my job, usually the first question is about what I’ll be doing next. When I tell people that I don’t know the answer to that, I usally get blank stares, which equates to their surprise at my choice to leave without having something firm waiting for me at the other end of the tunnel. Other people ask if I am gonna do photography full time, and my answer to that is usually an immediate no. Sure it probably makes the most sense, but at the same time, I don’t wanna kill that passion by making it work.

So the great beyond lies ahead, I must admit, I do have a job lead that I’m working on, but I’m also excited at the prospect of having the time to work on some personal projects.

My last day as a working joe is Friday, August 17th. The following day, I turn 33 and start at the beginning of the rest of my life.

Hopefully now I’ll have time to start posting again.
