Crumbled to the Ground

If you haven’t heard, The Ear to the Ground Festival has officially been cancelled. I first heard of this news was last Thursday, when I heard that the vendors were left messages saying that the event was cancelled. I decided back then that I shouldn’t say anything, because I didn’t want to start a rumour mill.

Later this week, it was reported that they were moving the programming to various club gigs around the city. But today it was all officially canned. Apparently, there will still be some film and spoken word events on the weekend. And possibly the show at the Gladstone on Thursday.

It’s a really shame, it looked like it could have been a really good showcase. Sadly, my friend Emma will not be selling her stuff this coming weekend (She does sell her stuff online). And she is still out, her vendors registration fee at the moment.

However, we will still be giving away a schwag bag.. It’s pretty easy to enter.

Saving the Photographs and the Memories

What would you take with you if you only had an hour or two to load up your car and drive away from your home, possibly forever?

MSNBC’s Katrina Blog is one of the most interesting sites I have come across. The blog is written by two journalist reporting human interest stories from various areas hit by the Hurricane.

Of course one of my favorite entries is the one about 80-year-old Tom Owen, an ex Navy photographer. He saved a few of his images by placing them in a foam cooler.

What would you save?

Canadian Team comes to help.

I have to admit, I haven’t been following the events in New Orleans all that closely. Been checking online for pictures and other news every couple of days. This morning I found this on MSNBC. Interesting tidbits.

‘It’s going to be awful’ as body retrieval starts – Hurricane Katrina – MSNBC.com

In addition to help from other Louisiana and Alabama departments, a Canadian task force of firefighters and police arrived four days after the storm to help, St. Bernard Fire Chief Thomas Stone said.

“If you can get a Canadian team here in four days, U.S. teams should be here faster than that,” Stone said. Pointing to two large oil refineries, he added: “When they’re paying $5 to $6 a gallon for gas, they’re going to realize what this place means to America.”

Katrina Relief Auction

Over the past few days I have seen many images of the devastation of New Orleans from Hurricane Katrina. My thoughts go out to those who are still struggling to save their lives.

On Flickr there is currently a Katrina Relief Auction group that is auctioning off prints to raise money for the Red Cross.

I have been very busy the last few days, but I intend on placing a couple of prints up for auction.

Luckily, Jay and I had the pleasure of visiting New Orleans for a few days last year and we had a wonderful time. It’s hard to think that most of the city has been washed away.

Ninjalicious, I tip my hat to you.

This morning I read about it on Kendall’s site, The passing of Infiltration founder Jeff, a.k.a. Ninjalicious. I have never met the man, but I can say he has had an impact on me and the local photoblogging community. I don’t think urban exploration would be such a hugh phenomenon if it weren’t for the adventures of Ninjalicious. He leaves behind a huge legacy.

This photo was shot at the abandoned Whitby Mental Hospital. It has since been mostly demolished this summer. I like the tranquility of this image, and it is my small tribute to a man who opened many doors.

Timing is a strange thing, a few days ago I posted the feature on Andrew of worksongs.com which cited the infiltration site and talke about taking pictures in forbidden places. Yesterday, I went to a Breast Cancer Benefit, Then Today, I hear about Jeff’s passing from a year long bout with cancer.

With Heart

The Book, photo by Matt O’Sullivan

Last night, Jay and I made our way down to the Gladstone Hotel to the Picture the Cure Benefit for Breast Cancer. It was a wonderful evening of music, photography and hope for women everywhere. My friend Irina who is the main organizer of the event is participating in the “Weekend to End Breast Cancer”, benefitting Princess Margaret Hospital. In September she will be walking 60km in 2 days. Last year, she sold prints on the street to raise money for the cause. This year she stepped it up a notch and put together this amazing charity auction.

This is a picture I took of Irina in the Survivor room.

The show consisted of work being auctioned by 7 photobloggers. Irina, Carrie, Miles, Matt, Kendall, Charles and Catherine.

Jay and I ended up buying “The Book” by Matt O’Sullivan at the last minute. It is the picture at the top of this post. It has always been one of my favorites of his and I’ll be proud to hang it in my home and know that we did our small part to help the cause. (We already decided on a place for it)

Around 10pm, Irina had her head shaved, started by Carrie and finished by her husband, Zin. It was an amusing and a touching gesture by Irina. Overall a wonderful evening. I will be posting a longer spotlight entry regarding Irina and her journey in the near future. If you would like to sponsor Irina on her walk next month, you can do so online.

GTA – re-rated

Take Two interactive admitted for the first time yesterday that there are some sex scenes built into the video game Grand Theft Auto : San Andreas. (all three versions, for the PC, Playstation and Xbox).

So now they want to change the rating of the game from M – Mature 17+ to AO – Adults Only 18+. I really don’t see why there is much of a difference between 17+ and 18+ when I think most 16 year olds know more about sex now, than in the past. Is it really an issue?

Rockstar games is now working on a version that will comply with the M rating. It said it would provide new labels to any retailer willing to continue selling the version currently on store shelves. Personally I think these are gonna start flying off the shelf and I doubt most people will bother returning their orginal discs in the recall. I’m very tempted to track down a copy myself before they become a collectors item.

Don’t worry Rockstar Games, I think this fiasco and publicity will insure that your won’t lose any profits this quarter.
