Apple goes (red)

Apple has released the 4 gig iPod nano (PRODUCT) RED. It has the sleek new nano design in a hot red colour. Not only will your ears be happy, but colour is blazin and a portion of the proceeds of the sale goes directly to the Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa.

You can check out other (red) products over here. I don’t know where I have been hiding, but I didn’t know about this campaign until now. Apparently even my-space is a sponsor, but hey, everything seems to be marketed through my-space lately.

Jason and Kylie Bike Across Canada

IMG_1300

Over the weekend, I had a chance to meet up with Jason Shim and Kylie Hicklenton who are biking across Canada to raise money for Aids, more specifically bike ambulances in Africa.

They have been on break here in Toronto for the past week to attend Youth Aids Pre Conference at the University of Toronto. They hit the road again yesterday to complete their quest. Their journey started back in June in Vancouver and will finish in a few weeks as they head towards Newfoundland.

We were really impressed with their dedication to the cause, despite the poor contributions towards their ultimate $50,000 goal.

Everybody Hurts

401 Westbound at 12:30 AM

Just like a REM video, we got stuck on the 401 Westbound at Don Mills for almost 2 hours. People were out of their cars and walking around and there I was without my SLR camera. I luckily got this one shot before my phone died.

We were stuck behind a major accident, which drew in a number of emergency crew, including a couple of ambulance buses.

We finally got out of the jam when the OPP organized everyone to turn around one by one to rejoin the express lanes which were also down to one lane due to construction.

Let the seeding begin.

So it looks like the wheels are in motion. A number of local bloggers and friends have started to take advantage of matchstick’s seeding process and are being rewarded with a new cellphone upgrade. Even the mainstream media is catching on, such as this article in the National Post, Nokia ‘seeds’ bloggers with free camera phones.

If you think you might be able to qualify for a phone and wouldn’t mind a free upgrade, let me know and we can see if I can hook you up.

* Must live in Toronto or Vancouver
* Hosts a popular blog with 400+ visits a day
* Between the ages of 22-35
* Keeps his/ her blog updated on a regular basis with pictures and video
* Very socially active

I think they are pretty flexible with the criteria, however you must be in one of the two geographic areas they are covering and you MUST be on Rogers with your current cellphone.

It’s unfortunate that they are strict on the Rogers criteria as I think they are losing out on some key bloggers in both cities. Even we here at photojunkie don’t qualify because we are currently with another mobility company and locked into a contract with them until November. Although, someone suggested, I pick up a pay as you go package with Rogers to bridge the gap.

On the upside, those that are signing on to the program are being hooked up with a pretty cool phone, the Nokia 6682 (for North American Standards). It features a 1.3 MP camera, video capture capabilities, email and a whole slew of other functionality which you can add in and accessories.

Raj from Ohmpage has this to tell me about the phone.

Well its kind of like a computer – It comes with the operating system, demo versions of some games, and some sample wallpapers. You can get lots of fancier programs for it though like things that let you record calls, or do odd things. addon software. I just installed a program to auto-lock the keys after a designated amount of time (so I dont accidentally hit buttons when the phone is in my pocket and I forget to lock the keys).

Over at Marmalade, Kelly, one of the first I got hooked up with a phone, and describes on her blog how Matchstick really kitted her out.

“In addition to the phone (which you can’t see because I’m using it to take the picture), they gave me a 512MG memory upgrade (the phone comes with a 64MG card), a Bluetooth headpiece, earphones so that I can listen to MP3s, and a USB cable so that I can connect the phone to my computer. Also bundled up nicely in a paper carrier bag were the standard accessories such as a charger, various manuals, CDRom with Nokia’s software on it, and other cables and bits and pieces.”

Currently, I think they have seeded about a dozen bloggers, a good chunk through me, but I know for a fact that they are looking to give out plenty more in the coming weeks, 45 in Toronto and 45 in Vancouver.

So drop me a line if you think you might qualify and want to give one a go.

Ride for Heart

IMG_0440

So my sister, Michelle is doing this year’s Becel Heart & Stroke Ride for Heart on Sunday. All the money that she raises will go directly towards research for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. If you have a couple of bucks to spare for a good cause, you can sponsor her.

This is what she has to say for herself.

Knowing that I’m not exactly athletically inclined, many people have asked me why I’ve decided to voluntarily sign up for such an event. I have a few reasons. I felt the need to challenge myself physically and try to get myself into better shape by pushing my own personal limits. I’ll also be doing the ride with some of my greatest friends, so the day is sure to be a fun experience.

But most importantly, I wanted to do the ride for all the people close to me who have lost loved ones due to heart attack or stroke or tragically even both. It is for these friends that I do this — love is my greatest motivation. I’m sure many of you have been personally effected in your own lives too. And it may seem cliché but I know I can truly make a difference… and YOU can help me!

If you’d like to sponsor me, just click here to my secure pledge page. And while all pledges over $20 are tax deductible (a bonus for all you tax payers), I would happily accept ANY dollar amount your budget can afford — $15, $10, $5, hey whatever you can spare. Remember every single dollar counts.
