Busy Week

It’s the first week of December and my week is jammed packed already. I wish I could blame it on the holidays, but most of the events I’m going to aren’t really holiday related.

Demo Camp Toronto 16 – This is happening at the Toronto Board of Trade in First Canadian place tonight and will run from 5 to 9pm. There are tickets still tickets available to the event. For me it will be nice to see the Torcamp crew.

Spacing Fall 2007 Launch – Spacing magazine is releasing their Green issue at the Berkeley Church on Queen Street, tonight. The door open at 8pm and it’s free admission. If you wanna pick up a magazine it’s $5. It should be quite the party.

Toronto Blogger Pub Night – We’ll be enjoying an evening of drinking and socializing at the Victory Cafe (581 Markham Street, upstairs) on Wednesday night. The drinks will start flowing at 7pm. It will be nice to catch up with some folks.

the too-explicit injustice of kind population! – We are topping off the week with my gallery opening at Whippersnapper Gallery. The gallery is in the heart of Little Italy and doors will be open starting at 7pm on Thursday evening.

GTABloggers: I’m Picking up the Ball

So over the last year and a half, I’ve gotten busy and kinda let gtablogers.com die a slow death. I dropped the ball and let things slide way way down. Well it’s not quite dead yet, and we are looking at rebuilding it in the next couple of months, bigger and even better than before. Aside, from being able to surf through an extensive blogroll of Toronto blogs, the GTABlogger community provided two things, which I’m officially bring back a) Regular Social Get Togethers and b) and Active Mailing List.

I know this is short notice for most, but quite a few of you have known about this for awhile now. We are having a Pub Night at the Duke of York TONIGHT.

GTABloggers Pub Night – March 2007
Tuesday, March 6, 2007

6:00pm – 11pm
Duke of York
39 Prince Arthur Ave.
Toronto, ON
Reservation is under GTAbloggers.

The second announcement is the opening of the GTABloggers google group.
http://groups.google.com/group/gtabloggers

The old list used to be a great resource to ask about various things about the city, ie recommendations for places to eat, buy things etc. I hope the Google group will grow to be something similiar to the old mailing list.

Homepages for the Holidays!!!

So you have a blog? photoblog? LJ? and you live in Toronto? We are throwing a little party on Friday to celebrate the Holidays and the return of our very own Livzang, who will be home from London England over the holidays.

Here are the deets.

* When: Friday, December 22nd at 8:00 p.m.
* Where: The Groundhog Pub, 401 Bloor Street East (near Bloor and Sherbourne, very close to Sherbourne Station)
* Why: Because most of us haven’t seen Liz in ages and it’s the freaking Holidays.

I know it’s a busy time of year and it is the Friday night before Xmas but feel free to drop in for a quick drink or swing by and stay awhile.

Feel free to blog about it and spread the word. Bring a friend. The more the Merrier.

Blogging Toronto

Yesterday, we were down at Queen’s Park for the annual Word on the Street. This year I was on the panel discussion, Blogging Toronto which was moderated by Spacing Magazine’s Matt Blackett. Also on the Panel were Alexa Clark representing Cheap Eats, Sarah Hood from Unknown Toronto and Tim Shore from BlogTO.

It’s amazing how quickly a hour goes by. There was a lot of discussion about community and how blogging has progressed. But I walked away from the panel feeling like I had more to say.

We talked about how Blogging has changed my life. And I guess what wasn’t hit home was the fact that for most bloggers, this is something that they do above and beyond their regular 9 to 5 job, which doesn’t make us any different from non bloggers. Blogging just happens to be a tool for us express ourselves through words and pictures to a broader audience.

As humans we all have stories to tell, whether fantastical or mundane, but what we don’t have are all the resources to publish a book to share them with the world. Blogging has enabled the general public to share their stories, their opinions, their work. The value of course isn’t in the single voice of one blogger, but in the collected work of many. This is what makes the Toronto blogging and photoblogging community special. As a collective, we create a picture of the city showing off a multidimensional view of what Toronto is all about.

Blogging Toronto at Word on The Street

This coming Sunday, September 24th is the 17th annual The Word of the Street magazine and book festival is taking place at Queen’s Park here in Toronto. It will be a day packed with author readings, entertainment, great deals on books and much more.

This year I’m actually participating in the festival, on a discussion panel called Blogging Toronto, which is being moderated by Matt Blackett of Spacing Magazine. The panel will be at the Wordshop Marquee stage starting at 12:30pm (which is in the North East section of Queens Park) where we will discuss the art of blogging and how it ties us to the city and community.

If you make it out, come over and say hi after the panel. I’ll have photojunkie buttons on hand if you ask nicely.

Back to School with the Torontoist

    torontoist_back_to_school

Come down to the Tranzac tonight where Torontoist will be throwing a back to school partay! This will be like a farewell party for me, as I will be leaving the Torontoist family. I just haven’t had the time to give it the attention it deserves from me.

Jason and Kylie Bike Across Canada

    IMG_1300

Over the weekend, I had a chance to meet up with Jason Shim and Kylie Hicklenton who are biking across Canada to raise money for Aids, more specifically bike ambulances in Africa.

They have been on break here in Toronto for the past week to attend Youth Aids Pre Conference at the University of Toronto. They hit the road again yesterday to complete their quest. Their journey started back in June in Vancouver and will finish in a few weeks as they head towards Newfoundland.

We were really impressed with their dedication to the cause, despite the poor contributions towards their ultimate $50,000 goal.

Matchstick expands their search for Canadian Bloggers

    IMG_9739

Earlier this year, Matchstick approached a number of bloggers about their opinions on buy and using technology, more specifically cellphones. Back in June, they started seeding Nokia 6682 cellphones to bloggers both in Toronto and Vancouver handing out approximately 60 phones to date.

There are still about 30 phones left up for grabs to Canadian bloggers. Their efforts have moved to the Montreal and Calgary markets, but they are also willing to look at Ottawa, Edmonton and Halifax if the right candidates present themselves.

Here is the criteria that Matchstick is looking for.

    * Hosts a popular blog with 400+ visits a day
    * Between the ages of 22-35
    * Keeps his/ her blog updated on a regular basis with pictures and video
    * Very socially active
    * Must currently be on the ROGERS network with their current phone.
    * Lives in one of the above mentioned cities

If you know anyone who fits this and is interested in a free phone upgrade drop me a line and I can put them in touch with the appropriate people.
