Button Mash This: Chiptunes Orchestra at Nuit Blanche 2011

Over the past month or so, the rad ass members of The Royal Canadian Chiptunes Orchestra have been rehearsing for their performance at the Tiff Bell Lightbox as part of Toronto’s annual Nuit Blanche all-night art event. I am honoured to say that I’ve been playing with this amazing group of talented people and we’re all very excited to share our music. Our set consists mostly of awesome cancon covers which have been given the 8-bit treatment. I assure you fun will be had by all and noise will be made by as many as possible as we will be highly encouraging audience participation. To entice you further, here’s a teaser of what you might expect to hear from the night.

Aside from The Royal Canadian Chiptunes Orchestra, there will also be a ton of fantastic 8-bit musicians slotted throughout the entire evening right up until the early morning. Performers include Battle Lava, Deadbeatblast, .exe, Radius and Helena, Oxvylu, Cybernetic Orchestra, Freque, Awesome Force, Jeff the World, Starpilot, Tetris Hold’em, bossFYTE, DJ Finish Him, Press Start 2 Play, and Spell ‘n Math. Now, that’s a LOT of chiptunes!

The Music of the Video Game! is on from 7pm to 7am on Saturday, October 1, 2011. So if you plan on heading out for Nuit Blanche tomorrow night, why not find a way to squeeze in a stopover at the Tiff Bell Lightbox [Cinema 1] onto your art-roaming schedules. You won’t regret it!

Button Mash This: Sony PS Vita

The 2011 Tokyo Game Show is now in full swing. Today marks day two of the four day event and so far it seems like all eyes are fixed in on Sony’s next-gen portable handheld, PS Vita. Amongst a slew of information presented at a press conference that kicked off TGS, Sony announced a list of launch titles (some of which will be available to demo over the weekend at TGS), as well as a release date this year on December 17 (but only in Japan).

Being a winter baby, this could have been the perfect birthday / Christmas present for me. But it looks like North America and Europe will have to wait until early 2012. And since I still don’t have my hands on a Nintendo 3DS yet, I suspect it’s going to be a very long winter. In the meantime, I’ll wait patiently for my Top Three Most Anticipated Sony PS Vita games

Button Mash This: Back To School

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. At least, that’s what Staples wants us to believe. September is officially upon us. Our time with daylight is getting shorter and the nights are getting colder. In less than a week, students will be heading back to school. And while this may be a bummer for some kids in real life, there are a few places in the world of gaming where going to school can actually be rather entertaining. So here they are, my Top Three School-Related Games

Button Mash This: Comics + Games

Today marks the opening day of FanExpo Canada, the country’s largest convention for all things comic books, sci-fi, horror, anime, and gaming related. The annual event, held at the Toronto Metro Convention Centre, spans over four days this year. I’ve attended a couple of times in the past and it’s always entertaining. So I’ll be sure to hit it up again at some point this weekend, perhaps even in disguise. In honour of this nerd mecca, here are my Top Three Comic Book Games

Button Mash This: Photojunkie Edition

Mii Rannie and Mii chelle playing Wii Music

This week, I thought it might be fun to talk about some of my favourite shared video game experiences with Rannie because today is our very own Photojunkie’s birthday! As siblings for over 30 years, I can safely say that there have been many grabbed controllers, blocked TV screens, and angered resets. But mostly, lots of laughs and loads of fun. So from me to you, brother, here are my Top Three Gaming Memories

Button Mash This: Tap Tap Glee

Before you head out to the theatre today to see Glee: The 3D Concert Movie, why not study up on some of those classic tunes by playing Tap Tap Glee on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch. If you’ve ever played a Tap Tap Revenge game, this will be familiar territory. You start with 3 songs which include “Don’t Stop Believin”, “Hell To The No” and “My Cup” and an additional 50 songs can be accessed through in-game purchases. Penny pinchers need not fret though because free tracks are offered up on a daily basis. Alongside this rather fun rhythm game, there is also Facebook integration (Gleeks VS Jocks), Twitter integration (Social), character bios and photos in the form of a McKinley High Yearbook, and direct access to exclusive videos from the film. This kind of killer content in a full package presentation makes Tap Tap Glee an absolute must download for any fan of the show. And now, for my fellow gleeks out there, a sneak peak of Glee: The 3D Concert Movie.
