The Prudence of Flesh

The Prudence of Flesh by Ralph McInerny

So one of my photos appears on a mystery novel by Ralph McInerny. I was first approached by St. Martin Press last November, but I kept it hush hush till now.

Gregory Barrett, a classmate of Father Dowling’s, left the priesthood twenty-five years ago. Now, after all these years, a woman threatens to bring a multimillion-dollar suit against him, alleging he sexually exploited her when he was still a priest and she was sixteen. Barrett has no memory of her, but is devastated at what these claims will do to his career as a radio host and to his new family. So he comes to Father Dowling for advice. Father Dowling, a parish priest in Fox River, Indiana, as usual, serves as part counselor, part sounding board, and part moral compass for priests and parishioners alike—not to mention cops and lawyers—and offers help to both Barrett and his accuser.

Before Barrett can decide what to do, and before the now-adult woman has made her demands known to the archdiocese, a body washes up on the shore of Lake Michigan, and Barrett becomes the primary suspect in the murder.

Also in the mix in this astutely drawn mystery are a failed writer, a parish busybody, an inept lawyer, and an embittered young man, each with his or her own agenda, and it is up to Father Dowling to unravel the links between these people whose lives were separated long ago, only to reconnect in tragedy.

Wiley’s photo books are on a shelf near you.

Over the weekend, I was over at Indigo trying to spend a 50 dollar gift certificate that I received. This was actually my second attempt at buying something at the store, but with so many books on so many different topics, I had a hard time deciding.

While skimming through the photography section I noticed that they had Digital Portrait Photography and Lighting: Take memorable shots everytime, in stock. It’s a wonderful book written by Catherine Jamieson and Sean McCormick with a ton of photos contributed by Chris and Jess of Istoica. I didn’t get a chance to read any of it, but I did flip through the pages to look at the images and the book looks really good.

Of course, if you haven’t done so already, check out Catherine’s other book on photoblogging called, Create Your Own photo blog. It’s a wonderful little guide on how to start you own photoblog site with great tips on how to get involved with the growing photoblog community, as well as pointers on what blogging software is right fit for you. It’s everything you need to know about photoblogging at your fingertips.

Idea in Stone Book Launch Tonight

Hamish

My good friend and
DIY
novelist, Hamish MacDonald is launching his third novel, Idea in Stone – a magical realist tale that stretches from Canada to Scotland, at It’s Not a Deli (986 Queen Street West) tonight (7:30pm).

There will be two short readings from the book along with fun tunes played by some talented local musicians. And there will be a draw for a copy of the novel and some handmade hardcover journals.

The books are individually handbound by the author, or you can download a free electronic copy on his site.

Margaret Atwood’s Long Pen

On Sunday at Book Expo Canada, I had the opportunity to meet the iconic Canadian author, Margaret Atwood. She was scheduled to do an autograph session at the McClelland and Stewart booth late in the afternoon, but I luckily caught her earlier in the day at the Long Pen booth, where she was urging show goers to try out her innovative product, the Long Pen.

One of the first people I saw at the Book Expo yesterday was the former Governor General of Canada, Adrienne Clarkson who had just finished signing previews of her upcoming book Heart Matters.

In general it’s been a busy past few days. Here is a sampling of photos from the weekend.

- The Jack Award
- McClelland & Stewart centenary party
- BookExpo Canada booth set-up
- HarperCollins Canada’s cocktail party
- BPAC Kids/Canadian Children’s Book Centre’s Annual Children’s Gala
- PGC/Raincoast/BookExpress BEC Kickoff Bash
- Scenes from the trade show floor: BookExpo Canada 2006
- 2006 Libris Awards
- The Canadian Manda party

I also ran into Alexa and Olena on the show floor, shmoozed with Ron and Dory from the Torontoist and met photojunkie reader, Bruce who works for Random House.

Later on in the day, I briefly met Mike Holmes, who was signing autographs for his adoring fans. He was the only author who bothered to ask my name and shake my hand as I zipped in front of the line to take a picture. Really nice guy.

Also caught the work of Chalkmaster Dave outside the convention centre. He was working on a sidewalk ad for Harper Collins showcasing the upcoming release of U2 by U2 (due in stores September 26th, 2006)

Souvenir of Canada, The Film

douglas coupland

It was once a book by Douglas Coupland (pictured above, this is an old shot from a reading he did at the Church on Berkley a few years back), two books actually. I just found out the the documentary, Souvenir of Canada is playing exclusively here in Toronto at Canada Square. It’s been playing for about a week and a half now in toronto. I’m not sure how long it will be playing, but you should probably try and catch it while you can.

The film is also playing at the Fifth Avenue Cinemas in Vancouver.

BOTTOM LINE: You should see Souvenir of Canada because it’s the Canadian thing to do.

Create Your Own Photo Blog

Finally got my hands on a copy of Catherine Jamieson‘s book, Create Your Own Photo Blog. It’s a wonderful guide to building your own photoblog site, filled with great tips and templates. It covers the basics on getting your own site up and running to share with the world. Definitely worth picking up if you are thinking about starting your own photoblog.

Photojunkie was featured in the book, with this screen shot of a Live 8 shot taken last summer.

I also found these photos of Natalie and Matto in the book.

DIY: Book Publishing

Back in 2000 my friend Hamish MacDonald wrote an article for No Media Kings on Self Publishing. A lot has changed since then and there are way more options now on how to get yourself published. Now you can be your own book press.

Hamish's Books

Hamish currently lives in Edinburgh, Scotland and has self published 3 novels. In the photo above, you can barely see the photo I took of him years ago on the back cover of that stack of books. He really needs to fly me out there and do a new photoshoot.

Go ahead buy a book!
