The Devil’s Double, Danforth & A Little Bit Zombie

Fresh from being the WWII fondue fixated Howard Stark in Captain America, Dominic Cooper keeps the stache & steps up to take the lead in a different war zone with added multiplicity.

The Devil’s Double from Maple Pictures is the story of Latif Yahia who is chosen to be the body double of Saddam Hussein’s son Uday. The involuntary Prince and the Pauper tale takes place in the 90′s as Iraq invades Kuwait with C-bomb swears dropping as well as the real explosive devices.
Both characters are played by the Mamma Mia! star with the only difference being a set of buck teeth & nasty attitude toward woman, drugs & violence. Latif soon learns the high pitch mimic of his brotherly captor & accepts that for the sake of his family’s well being he will have to endure the depraved antics of the dictator’s son as well as stepping in to the situations left vacant by the primal hedonist.

The duel roles are masterfully made by Cooper though the evil twin routine is too terminally vulgar a contrast to stomach. This is even more literal as guts & other gashes spray gore across the screen in coke crazed reveling with a wedding crasher moment that is just too much.  An awkward forbidden love story with Uday’s favourite squeeze is the most absurd part of the film which drags out in the last third of the movie.  It turns out Saddam’s weapon of mass destruction was hidden in plain sight all along as of the fruit of his loins.

To take the unpleasantness away I made a trip to the Danforth for it’s annual tasting-palooza where Alliance Films were sponsoring the festivities with a great big Greek shoehorning of Immortals which will be released on 11/11 (make a wish!). Their full array of products were scattered among the rotating meats & other culinary delights. Green screen photo booths put you in the movie posters and even an early taste of Halloween happened with a haunted house to welcome the arrival of Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark to theatres in August.

At the end of the eating route I headed a little bit south for a test screening of A Little Bit Zombie at Projection Booth East. It was the first time I’d ever been to an event where the creators were ready to listen to opinions after sharing an almost complete version of a movie.  I was a slightly apprehensive of another zombie movie joining the ranks of the undead cinema catalogue but enjoyed the Canadian cottage excursion with a twist thanks to it’s snappy lines as two happy couples plan a big day for a ghoul groom.  I’m looking forward for the finished Rom-Com-Zom and suggest you invest in some cans of Tactical Bacon before the shelves are bare.
