10×10 : That’s like 100 queers!

So can I take a moment and talk about the elephant in the room? It’s Pride week here in Toronto and tonight I have an exhibit opening that celebrating LGBT People in the arts. A couple of months back, my buddy James Fowler asked me if I wanted to be a part of this project. The main premise was to have 10 queer photographers shoot 10 portraits of queers in the arts. And it’s all coming together tonight with an exhibit opening and book launch at The White House (studio), 277.5 Augusta Avenue.

I’m super pleased to be a part of this project and I was blessed to have 10 great people pose for me; Paul Bellini (pictured above), Maggie Cassella, Jonathan Cooper, Nick May, Renee Navarro, Richard Ryder, Rob Salerno, Jeffery Straker, Shawn Syms, and Jeremy Vandermeij.

The exhibit features photographs by: Tania Anderson, Joey Bruni, Paul Buen, John Caffery, InkedKenny, Patrick Lightheart, David Pike, G. Elliott Simpson, Tanja-Tiziana, and myself.

Proceeds from the book ($40) will go toward an award in the form of a grant for a young LGBT person or group seeking money for an arts project. The show runs from Monday, June 27 through Friday, July 8. Open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m at The White House Studio Space, 277.5 Augusta Ave., Toronto.

Old Man Pizza

During NXNE a couple of weeks back I found myself at Mitzi’s Sister catching a few acts (the james clarke institute, Evil Farm Children and Old Crowns). I also found myself a little hungry, so I wandered down the street to see what late night food options there were. That when I discovered Old Man Pizza at the south east corner of Jamison and Queen. Basically, I was able to get a slice of pizza and a pop for super cheap, $3.50 I think. Amazing.

Button Mash This: Music in Video Games

First, let me say that you have not stepped back in time to 2007. 4 years later, I’ve returned to my brother’s blog team to give another go at Button Mash This, a weekly column on all things gaming. I’ll likely spend most of my time here gushing over games that I love, but I also encourage you to share your favourites with us too. So, let’s get right to it.

Tonight, I’ll be attending Midsummer Rock Showcase at TIFF Bell Lightbox. The evening will feature music from the iPhone\iPad indie smash hit game Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP, which will be performed live for the first time by the music composer and sound designer Jim Guthrie and his seven piece band. By the way, this is a no-brainer, must-buy app for your iDevice of choice. I promise you will not be disappointed.

In honour of this amazingly rare one-night-only event, here are my Top Three Video Game Soundtracks

Smoker

On Monday, I visited the Bees at the Toronto Botanical Gardens. This is a teaser photo of a bee smoker. More to come.

Exhibit Profile: That’s So Gay

Queer isn’t just a way of effing — it’s a way of being.

With Toronto in full Pride Week mode, it seemed very fitting to highlight a new art exhibit going on at the Gladstone–That’s So Gay: The New Queer. This is the Gladstone’s Second Annual Pride Exhibition, curated by Sholem Krishtalka; In this year’s exhibition Krishtalka explores the meaning, definition, and stigma(s) around the word “Queer”. With the established tradition that most Pride exhibits and shows focus on the artist’s or performer’s sexuality, That’s So Gay decided to change the game by presenting the general public with work that isn’t about homosexuality, but rather an exploration of the art itself.

Queers in the Park – Back To Our Roots: Breaking New Ground

In conjunction with #stonewallTO, I spent a good portion of my Sunday afternoon in Cawthra Park, where the Back to Our Roots event was happening. An awesome alternative to Pride, it was a lovely afternoon of queers hanging out, eating and dancing in the park. They also had other programming and workshops in the 519 community centre, Overall a lovely event with lots of familiar face.

sTOnewall 2011

On Sunday, June 26th, 2011, The queer community gathered at Queen’s Park to March to the Church Street Village in solidarity to celebrate and commemorate our Proud history in a non commercial way with sTOnewall or #stonewallTO. Unfortunately, I woke up late on Sunday and finally caught up to the March just as it was pulling up to the 519 Community Centre on Church Street. The air was full of glitter and this overwhelming feeling of celebration and pride. It was actually quite a refreshing change.

Lilies in the Garden

I was at my sister’s place for a BBQ on Sunday evening. The first thing I noticed, pulling up to the house was these Lilies poking out past the fence.
