Michelle checks out the spidey cams
I saw Spiderman 3 in IMAX over the weekend, thanks to Irina. You gotta love a superhero who’s alter ego is a photojournalist that still shoots with film (a Nikon film SLR at that, Nikon name blacked out). Seriously, are there any PJ’s out there that still use film? Eddie Brock (played by Topher Grace), the new photographer at the Daily Planet uses at D50 (Nikon name also blacked out).
To be fair though, there are other scene where there are a whole slew of photographers who use both Nikon and canon Digital SLRs (without the names blacked out, very strange).
Anyway, the marketing machine is in full swing and it’s hard to go anywhere without seeing some sort of Spiderman reference. A walk through Walmart made me encounter Spidey merch at least every 10 steps, I kid you not. Including these cool Spidey Digital Cams for kids. For a mere 36 dollars and change, one of the cams is actually fitted with a preview screen. Although there was no mention of megapixel count. Perhaps I may pick one up, just because. Anyone else have one of these?

antonin kratochvil still shoots film. (or at least still did a year or so ago).
The blacked-out names are pretty common in movies and television. Just watch a week or two of CSI! The usual reason is that Nikon/Canon refused to pay any product-placement money, and the script required a camera, so they black out the name. It’s done in fairness to other companies who did pony up some cash to see their products featured.
You see it with Apple laptops all the time (Apple rarely pays for placement). Just look for a conspicuous non-Apple sticker over the Apple logo on the lid of any Apple laptops in TV and film.
