I could have bought a PS3 last night.

So yesterday my sister told me about a sale at Best Buy where all Gamecube titles were $10 off. Unfortunately the two stores that we went to were all picked over and ultimately had no stock in anything. The little adventure did lead us to a Toys R Us location where they had a sign outside saying that had PS3′s in stock. We smirked and quickly went over to the electronics section to check out if it was true.

There they were in all their glory, two 60gig PS3 consoles waiting to be bought. We had read about the phenomenon online (sorry can’t find the link at the moment) but seeing it in person was something else. What happened next had us laughing on the inside. A man approached the counter and asked the Sales Associate about when the Wii would be available again. The Sales man points to the PS3 and of course the customer doesn’t bite.

Lemme say it’s a sad state of affairs for Sony at the moment, they really seemed to botch the launch of their newest console. The majority of people who picked one up on launch day, did so to turn a profit, but the grey market simply died out. In other related news, my sister was talking to a family friend who works at Walmart. She told my sister that everyone was returning their PS3′s and were buying Wii’s instead.

If you had a choice to buy only one of the next generation consoles, which would you buy? I still think I made the right choice picking up the Wii.

While I completely agree that the PS3 launch was botched (and it’s too expensive), even after witnessing the Wii in action I still don’t understand the allure. If anything I feel like Wii is finally a next-gen console for younger gamers, and the X-Box and PS3 are for the more mature crowd. Of course, I’m not a very frequent gamer, but the long-term market relies on people like me to keep things moving.

I’ll be interested to see if my mind changes as better games are developed for the unusual controls of the Wii.

  2. Futureshop.ca had 1000 PS3 for sale on Boxing Day, I had one in my cart and could have pressed the buy button…but I didnt. They arnt going for near what they were on ebay a month ago. Plus, I have no interest in the PS3 for fun value…would definitally go for the wii.

Given the choice, I’d go with a 360, personally. If for no other reason than Gears of War. Of course, there are many other reasons as well. I have no inter4est in the PS3… maybe in a year when the developers have had a chance to really get their feet wet, but not before then at any rate. Plus, the 360′s online content is just too juicy. :)

I don’t know if there is truth in that “Younger gamer” comment. Over the holidays I have seen many grown adults (Uncles and whatnot) get totally excited over the Wii.

What the Wii has is a broader appeal than the PS3. It appeals to people who aren’t your typical gamer. And I think that is why it’s been so highly regarded.

Ryan.. I think ideally, most serious gamers will probably get a 360 and a Wii.

Although it did seem like the stores were overstocked in 360′s as well over the holidays.

I suppose we will have to wait till the next holiday season, to see how all the systems fair. Both the Wii and PS3 will be a year old and the 360 two years. Also by then the library of games will be more balanced.

What I want to know is…. How many First Person Shooter games does there need to be?

I went to a Toys R Us today and they had a few PS3 available for sale, and even one to try out. I wanted to try the Wii, but they only had the PS3 and the Xbox. I didn’t even see the Wii for sale…

If i had to pick one, it’d be definetly the Wii.

The 360 is by far the best bang for buck console. It needs an HDTV to really be appreciated but it is amazing. THe wii is an OK console for the price but we’re dealing with glorified gamecube graphics. Had the graphics in the Wii been better. I would definately pay around $350 for it. But yeah. the 360 is the show stealer this past christmas, then the wii and finally the ps3.

  8. chelle says:

Yes, the 360 and PS3 both have superior graphics… but so what! the same can be said for the PSP over the DS, but that didn’t stop the Big N’s ambitious lil handheld from totally “pwning” Sony’s overzealous portable machine. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again — it’s all in the gameplay people!

I own both. But I’m a junkie. And not everyone has made games their secret lovers. The general population does not game at all! And from those that do, they are only able (or willing) to lay down the dough for one or the other.

So what would you choose if you were a cautious newbie? The $600 PS3 \ $500 Xbox 360 with it’s intimidating trillion button controllers but stellar polygonal count! Or the $300 Wii with that ridiculously intuitive remote controller?

Don’t get me wrong, Gears of War looks fan-bloody-tastic. And let’s give credit where it’s due and say that Resistance: Fall of Man is pretty rad as well. And if I didn’t suck so bad at FPS games (and was a millionaire), I’m sure I’d have thoses systems in no time flat. But any game console that gets my father, my uncle, several of my aunts, my 6 yr old second cousin AND my 30-something brother all playing virtual bowling TOGETHER is totally aces in my books and wins my vote hands down.

I’ve played GoW on a standard def TV, and can say you really do NOT need HD to appreciate the system. Right now, ya, 360 FTW. When Metroid Prime 3 comes out, I’ll need my Wii, but fudge, it’s NOWHERE on Nintendo’s site right now, as of today. I can’t find ANYTHING on it. Gah..

On that note, when’s the next Wii partay Rannie? I need that prize I won and I needz to really kick some Tennis ass.

  10. Ice Queen says:

And hey, who won the costume prize at the Tiki party? Tell me I didn’t spend $9.99 on a white suit for nothin’. (Yeah, like I need an excuse to dress up and look silly!)

    Is the prize the PS3?

  11. Josh Jones says:

well, luckily i have both a ps3 and a wii. i bought the ps3 with my own money and i got a wii for christmas. i will admit that right now the wii has better titles, but i bet by the end of the year he ps3 will dominate.

We own DS lites, lined up overnight to get a Wii each on launch day, and we enjoy laughing at unbought PS3 machines just a little more than your average Joe. But don’t get it twisted, we’re not haters. To prove it, here’s a non-Nintendo-related link. (Maybe next week, there will be two!) [...]
