Photojunkie goes Nokia Squared

Rannie and the Nokia 6265i

On Monday night, I went ahead and upgraded my old LG to a Nokia 6265i with Telus. Basically the phone has a 2.0 MP cam with video capture. The phone also plays MP3, Video clips and Radio. It’s decent and I’m enjoying it. I ended up picking a memory card for it on Tuesday as well as a card reader. And I’ve since figured out how to connect to to my Mac via bluetooth.

For the longest time, I was holding out to see if I could qualify for a free phone from Matchstick. The main thing holding them back was the fact that I wasn’t on the Rogers Wireless network. Fortunately, Jay is with Rogers, so I got him hooked up with the Nokia 6682 phone on photojunkie.ca behalf via Matchstick. We picked up the phone yesterday evening along with a bag of goodies. The Matchstick package came with an extra pair of earplugs, a bluetooth enabled earpiece and a larger memory card. Needless to say, I’m gonna steal the earpiece and I have already taken the black pair of earphones (having the earphones allowed me to enable the radio function on the phone), leaving Jay the white pair.

Jay and the Nokia 6682

Last night, Jay downloaded a bunch of MP3s from his computer to the larger memory card. I did the same the night before. Now you’re wondering, what good is music on a cellphone. A) it means we can commute on the TTC without carrying our ipods if we choose and B) On Jay’s phone he can set MP3′s as the ringtone (Unfortunately that function is disabled on my phone, damn you Telus!).

One of the great features we discovered about the Nokia 6682 is the voice activated dialing. Just imagine the ability to tell your phone who to call and having it dial the number without fumbling through the contact list. Sweet Jesus! All phones should have this function.

I’m sure over the next little while, we’ll discover all the added features of the phones, but for now we are playing with the obvious, music and pictures. Expect to see pics and clips from both cameras over the next little while.

Sounds like there’s some great stuff with the Matchstick deal. I’m currently (eagerly) awaiting my own Nokia 6682 from them and I can’t wait. I wish I could have just gone to a store to pick mine up or the Matchstick office but I’m one of the first Montreal targets so I have to wait for mine to be shipped out.

The 6265i has voice dialing as well…I picked up a cheap bluetooth headset @ Factory Direct & it works well :)
Also – i’ve found this program to be quite handy on my mac: http://www.macmedia.sk/pd.htm It lets you sink the calender & contacts, etc; As well as install java software (J2ME) There are plenty of free apps out there… including VNC and Remote Desktop viewers :) Also check out Salling Clicker, its pretty sweet! (but costs $)

I have connected a bluetooth headset to the phone, if there is voice dailing , it’s not an obvious function. Perhaps i should “READ THE MANUAL”…

I am actually using Phone Director and figured out how upload and use MP3s as ringtones in my phone, via Phone Directors theme creator.

So I read the manual and figured out how to program in voice dialing.

On the 6682, no programming is required, I just need to press one button and give the proper name.

Everything you need to know about hacking your phone, in one forum thread.

I’ve got the same phone, I’m debating whether it’s worth it to get the USB cable and take my chances or if I should just pay for a few decent ringtones from Telus.

It’s the principle of the thing that irritates me.

  6. Long says:

Or, Nox, you could just transfer the ringtones via bluetooth. It’s not as quick as USB 2.0, but it’s good enough. Or you can also take the memory card and put it in a card reader and transfer anything you want to transfer.

  7. photojunkie says:

Long, Being able to use certain files as a ringtone is a locked feature in Canada with this phone. Basically, Telus wants us to buy any ringtones from them directly. So transfering the files via bluetooth or USB isn’t really an option.

These methods do allow for people to keep music files on their phone.

As for the solution provided by Nox, this isn’t an option for me, because I am on a Mac, although I haven’t checked to see if the described program is available for Macs

For Mac users your best bet is Phone Director.

I find that the best way to upload any media files (music, pictures, video) is to do so is uploading the files directly to the memory card via USB.

Don’t even bother trying to uploaded any of these via Bluetooth. It’s a waste of time.

there is a really easy way to send the files.

i don’t know if you know this, but i didn’t even read the manual and downloaded pictures from my nokia onto my macbook this way:

once you search and make the connection with your macbook and nokia, you can browse the cellphone and go to whichever folder you have your pictures saved in and select all and the mac will grab them all in one shot.

really fast and easy than picking them up individually.

[...] If it seems implausible that someone would give me a phone for free, you can read about other people in Canada who have received the same deal from Matchstick such as Rannie (who also mentioned the criteria required to get one yourself right here) fellow Montrealer Long, Kelly, Blaine, Sameer, and probably countless other lucky people if you search on Google for it.
