Canon Digital Rebel XTi Officially announced in Canada

So I got the press release this afternoon from Canon Canada officially announcing the arrival of the newest in their line of Digital SLR’s, the Canon Digital Rebel XTi. This is the same rumoured camera as the Canon EOS 400D which was floating around online yesterday.

The features include
• 10.1 Megapixels
• APS-C CMOS image sensor
• 2.5 inch display screen
• 9-point autofocus system
• Simplified and streamlined menu navigation
• EOS Integrated Cleaning System, a self-cleaning image sensor unit/dust removal system
• new maximum burst rate in large/fine and raw quality modes that – at 3 frames per second

The new XTi will be available in store mid-September and will be offered in both sleek brushed silver patina and “pro” matte black finishes and will be available in two kit configurations with and without Canon’s high quality EF-S 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 zoom lens. The manufacturer’s suggested list price of $1,350 with the zoom lens kit, while the body only kit will carry a manufacturer’s suggested list price of $1,175.

It’s great to see more bells and whistles being added to the Rebel series of Canon DSLRs, but the most exciting part of this release will be the introduction of the EOS Integrated Cleaning System. The system does two things to prevent dust; an ultrasonic anti-dust shake activates automatically for one second whenever the camera is powered on or off and a Dust Delete Data function can be turned on or off to map any persistent dust that remains.

Hopefully, this means we’ll see these anti-dust features in future releases of the Canon EOS DSLRs. And that is something to cheer about.

UPDATE: I added in the two shots of the camera that they provided, both in sleek brushed silver patina and “pro” matte black. My personal choice would be the “pro” matte black. You may not shoot like a “pro” but it’s always cool to look like one.

And if you got some spare change in your wallet maybe you might wanna check out the two new EF lens that Canon has announced. The powerful and fast EF50mm f/1.2L USM lens which will be available in November for a manufacturer’s suggested lst price of $2,150 and the compact and universal EF70-200mm f/4L IS USM for a manufacturer’s suggested list price of $1,800. Unfortunately, that’s more change than I actually have to spare. Besides I can buy 3 XTi’s with that kinda cash.

On Degrassi

Last week, I shot Jennifer Hollett for My Toronto Includes. She picked Degrassi Street as her favorite place in the city. I was gonna orginally use this shot for her profile in the project, but decided to go with this very Toronto-esque photo of her in front of the Degrassi street sign with a roaring streetcar in the background.

The Kids, Junior High, High, and The Next Generation. This area inspired the ultimate afterschool special, and I believe the best teen tv series of all time. Diverse, charming, and friendly, Toronto’s Degrassi Street deserves the hype.

Where is the best place to eat in the city?
King’s Cafe on Augusta. I love the food here so much that I could cry in joy. Order Soy Drumsticks as an appetizer, and the Kung Po Soy Chicken with rice for a main entree to taste why King’s tagline is “Perfect Vegetarian Food”.

What do you like about living in Toronto?

The world squeezed into one city.

What do you hate about living in Toronto?

Everyone’s too busy to fully enjoy what Toronto has to offer.

Favorite personal story or commentary on the city

One of my favourite Toronto memories is performing in the 2005 V-Day production of The Vagina Monologues. I was part of an amazing cast of vibrant and passionate women from the city, speaking about everything vagina! I played a Southern woman of colour in “The Little Coochie Snorcher That Could”. The show sold out and proceeds from the performance went to to Julliette’s Place, a shelter in Toronto for abused women and their children, as well as aid for women in Iraq.

My Toronto includes everyone.

Perola for pupusas, Golden Turtle for the Pho, Udupi Palace for the Dosas, Flip, Toss Thai for the Phad Thai….none of these places for atmosphere.

What do you like about living in Toronto?
Good food, small communities, neighbourhoods nestled in the downtown, hidden jems, lovely friends, everything in bikeable distance.

What do you hate about living in Toronto?
pollution, high cost of living, the honking soccer fans, the way people are afraid to dance at concerts.

Where would I find you on a lazy Sunday afternoon in the city?
Eating pupusas at Perola’s, shopping for groceries, making a big dinner, riding my bike.

This city has so many hidden treasures. I love being able to walk down streets in my ‘hood and run into old friends, or find complete anonymity a streetcar away. It’s the perfect size – intimate enough that you feel you can change things in your neighbourhood, but large enough that you can still get lost in the urban bustle.

My Toronto includes a sprawling community of wonderful people, constant distractions, every spice and flavour from around the world, and plenty of green space.

Scarborough RibFest 2006

When something involves food, the whole crew gets in on the action. Of all the years I lived in Scarborough, I never realized they had a ribfest. Now that I’m in North York, we decided to hit the old stomping grounds to check out the ribs. We weren’t disappointed.
