So we’re having our first rain of the season and despite the lack of sun, it’s quite refreshing. You can definitely sense that “spring smell” in the air.
Stuck on Manual
So my Canon 10D is officially sick at the moment. I can still take pictures with it, however the auto-focus sensor seems to be out to lunch. If I have any lens on automatic the lens continually focuses in and out without finding the sweetspot. So basically I have been running on manual the last few days. It’s not a total loss, but with my poor eyesight, it definitely has slowed me down.
So I went ahead and contacted Henry’s where I bought the camera as well as Canon Canada.
Henry’s reply: If you would like an estimate to repair your camera, we charge $50 to send your camera to a technician to assess the problem, (the $50 will go towards the repair). Typically repairs are between $200-$300 but it is very hard to judge without seeing the camera.
Canon’s reply: Based on the information in your e-mail, I recommend that you forward your product directly to our Service Department for inspection. Please include your name, address, daytime telephone number, copy of your bill of sale [if it falls within the manufacturers warranty limitations] and a brief description of the symptom(s). Upon receipt, we will have a technician thoroughly inspect your product and advise you of the findings.
If repairs are not covered under the warranty terms, we will provide you with an estimate pending your authorization. Please understand that it is impossible for us to provide any repair estimates via e-mail or over the telephone. At this time, we do not charge for the estimate from our Service Department.
I can’t believe Henry’s wants a deposit just to look at the camera. The only draw back to Canon however is the fact that they are only open during business hours and are all the way out in Mississauga.
So the question remains, do I go to Henry’s or go to Canon and spend the 300 or so dollars on the repair. The other option is saving the money from the repair and putting it towards a new replacement camera altogether. There is the newly released Canon 30D or the much more expensive full-frame 5D. In any of the cases, I really don’t want to spring the cash for this expense.
It seems like such a shame though. I have a 35mm Canon SLR which I bought used, so it’s quite a number of years old and works perfectly. The Canon 10D is only about 2.5 years old and is in need of repair. They don’t make things last like they used to and the Digital SLR market seems to be moving at such an amazing rate.
Apple hits their 30something
Forbes has some great features on Apple turning 30, on April 1st. They have a cool look back at the past 30 years, including some of their successes and failures. It’s amazing to read some of the history behind the brand. I myself have own a Mac for about two years now, but my cousin was an early adopter back in the late 80′s, early 90′s.
Canon vs Nikon
The age old debate continues, which is better Canon or Nikon? Complete Digital Photography has a great comparative article on the virtues of the Nikon D200 vs the Canon 30D. The conclusion, yes both are great cameras that compete well head to head.
As a long time Canon user, my instinct would be to get the Canon. But not because it is better than the Nikon. I’m already invested in glass and I’m quite accustomed to Canon’s user interface. The lower price point definitely helps too. If you are a first time buyer, go to the store and try them both out. See how they feel in your hand and see which interface makes more sense to you, cause these are the things that will matter in the long run.
Looking to start a blog?
Are you looking to start your own blog and don’t know how? This article outlines the virtues of Blogger, Typepad and Apple’s new iweb as possible choices for you. Not quite the right fit, don’t worry there are plenty of other options out there, which I suppose can make the choice difficult. But the three mentioned in the article are a perfect starter for someone who has no experience. I myself started on Blogger 6 years ago.

Matt vs. GTAbloggers
The get together tonight at Paupers went really well, dispite having to share the bar with some Toronto sailing group. We had a pretty good turn out considering we haven’t had one of these events in ages. Pictured above are David, Matt, Eli and James
A larger list of attendees will follow once I have gotten some sleep.
IN ATTENDANCE
Matt, Jay, John, James, James, Jeremy, Jerwin and Jeffery, Jayme, Joey, Wendy, Eli, David, David, David, Paul, Eva, Maria, Graig, Pracha, Chris and Jess, chelle, Himy, Randy, Salim, myself and Eldon (no blog)
Now the question is who are the four or five people that I am missing? Hopefully some people can help me fillout this list. There were a handful of people I didn’t actually meet.
Apple Store Event Widget

So I was surfing the Yorkdale Apple Store website earlier, to see if there was anything interesting on the roster. I noticed they had announced a new Apple Store Event Widget, so of course I downloaded it. So now I can stay up to date with any cool events going on. Unfortunately the widget only shows the events for the next 7 days, so if I really want to plan ahead, I’ll still have to check the store’s site.
