I was over at Allen’s site where he has posted about the rumoured Canon EOS 5D. When the 20D was released to replace the 10D I was in no position to switch, even though it seem that many did. I decided I would wait for the next generation before trading up. Well folks this might be it.
12.8 MP Full-Frame sensor
3 FPS
9 AF points
60 JPG buffer
2.5″ 230,000px LCD
Magnesium body
DIGIC II processor
EF mount
USD $3500
Lemme just say, full frame, a 2.5 inch LCD yowzers, it’s my wet dream. It’s still quite pricey, but it’s slowly getting affordable.
Now I need to find a way to raise the money!

what the….
that 5D sounds like it’ll be a monster. my poor 300D just wimpered with sadness. poor thing.
although, if you keep up your Portraits in the Park, at a suggested donation of $5 and a Cdn pricetag of about $4200-$4500, you’ll be on pace for 900 portraits ! keep shooting !
but what a nice dSLR that looks to be.
900 portraits!!!! YIKES
I’m lucky if the donations for the portraits covers the cost of film and processing.
I just need to sell 6 pieces for $1000 each.. ya that’s the ticket!
Other than the increase in megapixels I doubt there’s that much there over the 10d to genuinely get excited about. I know it’s new gear and boy does that smell good, but really, invest in lenses!
Ya i should stick to buying lens and accessories and film!!! Although the FULL FRAME is a nice feature!!!
The full frame has me drooling. I’m glad I’ve held off getting a 20D. Although actually, that hasn’t been my choice, but my bank account’s choice.
Full frame is romantic, indeed, but I have to agree with Miles that lenses are the right equipment to invest in right now. Things are moving at such a quick pace that cameras are out of date less than a year after they have been released. I am currently using a 350D for an SLR, a supposed entry-level consumer SLR, and it leaves me wanting for nothing. Now that I have the 10-22 zoom, I can get true wide-angle, the way my eye sees, and no camera is going to help me get better shots. It’s all about the lens.
i too agree that lenses or even studio equipment are the way to go. bodies come and go but a good lens purchase could open new possibilities.
i also think the 5D rumour is a hoax. at that price point, i doubt people would buy the 1D anymore. having said that, i’d be interested in seeing what new bodies come out this year (not that i can afford one).
Im with a few commenters.. If I had a 10D (I have a 20) and had $3500 to spend I’d get a few lenses. Full frame would make me soil myself with glee for the first few months, then I’d be wondering what all that new shiny glass would have been like instead.
Although I photograph with Nikon gear, the gear-head part of me is interested in the 5D.
I’m simply curious about it’s rumored pricing. 3500 USD is substantially lower than the EOS-1D MarkII. I know that there’s a lot extra with the 1D MarkII (improved AF, weatherproofing etc. etc.) so I wonder how much the FF sensor actually costs.
Is the major appeal of FF the prospect of reduced noise? Because if so, sensors like the Fuji SuperCCD are showing that its possible to get great results at high ISOs with a smaller sensor.
